All in the Family – A Van Operator’s Early Start

June 29, 2012

Like many van operators, I got my start in the moving business at an early age and through a family member.

My uncle was a van operator for Suddath back in the 80s. I crewed with him and grew up in the moving business, working for him during the summer. My cousins and brothers worked with him, too. Looking back, I can see it was a great opportunity to stay close to my extended family. My uncle was just one of those great guys. He taught me a lot about being responsible and becoming a mature young man. I was a pretty shy kid, but the job helped me gain confidence meeting and working with new people. I saw how my uncle really cared about the business and cared for the customers. He passed that onto me. You meet so many people in this business, you have to learn to put people first. My uncle is still driving today.

I’ve been a van operator for 17 years, an owner/operator for the past eight. I’m glad I made the move to owner/operator for the flexibility it gives me, especially as I get older.

Growing up, I dreamed of being a pro-football player. I played ball throughout high school. But I guess the moving business was in my blood in a way. I’ve stayed with the business because I love what I do. I have a real passion for it. It’s kind of hard to explain. I don’t see myself leaving the business and I can’t imagine moving for another company. I’ve been with Suddath the entire time. They’re good people, they treat you right, and everyone’s a team player.
